History and Culture

Early history

The island was first inhabited about 15 centuries ago, settled by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula and southern China. Back to 1687, the island was called Pulo Cornam. The name Samui can be seen  mysterious in itself. Probably  it is an extension of the name of one of the native trees, mui, or from the Malay word saboey, meaning “safe haven”Ko is the Thai word for “island”.

Until the late-20th century, Ko Samui was an isolated self-sufficient community. It had  little connection with the mainland of Thailand. There was no roads until the early 1970s, and the 15 km journey from one side of the island to the other could take a whole-day trek through the mountainous central jungles.

Development of the tourism

The first foreign tourists started to visit the island during the early 1960’s, many considered themselves to be ‘hippies’ trying to find enlightenment on the trail to Kathmandu.

In the same time Koh Samui was undergoing some fairly radical changes : the start of a project to build the islands first road in 1967 and in the mid 70’s, some hills was dynamited and concreted in order to make the island more accessible. The islands popularity began to increase in the hippy community.

Religion

Buddhism is the main religion: 95% of Thais are Buddhists. Other religions such as Islam, Catholicism, Hinduism and Taoism are also practiced. The inhabitants are generally very tolerant and open-minded regarding other religions and cultures, so be careful to respect the local traditions and habits.
